What is Whois database?

blog

Whois (literally "Who?") is a tool for querying information bases (called registries) regarding domain names & IP addresses. The data contained in these databases do not include any form of warranty but generally allow to find the owner of a domain or IP address, especially in case of dispute.

The Whois service thus has two main objectives:

  • Obtain information about the owner of a domain name (administrative, technical and possible contact information) and the name servers associated with the domain name.
  • Obtain information about assigning IP address ranges.

Command line tools exist under certain operating systems, including Unix Systems (for example Linux or MacOS X), so the syntax of the command is as follows:

Whois domain_name or ip_address

This command usually has a large number of parameters, depending on the operating system. To know them, simple enter:

Whois --help

To make your work easier, we’ve come up with Whois service for almost all extension, accessible through http://www.checkwhois.com/

IP Addressing

Administrative information about IP addresses is listed by the organizations:

  • Obtain information about the owner of a domain name (administrative, technical and possible contact information) and the name servers associated with the domain name.
  • RIPE NCC ( European IP Networks , whois.ripe.net ) for Europe;
  • APNIC (Asia Pacific Network Information Center), whois.apnic.net for Asia and the Pacific
  • ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers, whois.arin.net ) for North America and Sub-Saharan Africa;
  • LACNIC (Latin American and Caribbean IP Address Registry, whois.lacnic.net ) for Latin America and the Caribbean;
  • INTERNIC (whois.internic.net) for other parts of the world.

The first octet of the IP address is used to determine which zone belongs to the address:

  • IPv4 address space (IANA)
